My saab is finally back on the road and now im being reminded of the problem I used to have with the starter not engaging everytime I turn the ignition. Some times just clicks once others not at all.. Then eventually enough times it will fire up.. When the saab mobb here in denver repaired my shift shaft and linkage they too noticed it.. Said it was a common problem and that it has to do with the wire not delivering enough power to the starter. They have a way to fix the problem however forking over the money right now is a problem... Anyone else have this issue, or possibly the remedy...
Thanks for your time in this matter.. |

| I would check the charging system first. Make sure your voltage to the the starter is the same as battery.Check the ground also for voltage drop. The trigger connection on the starter solenoid is also prone to corrosion. If all cables are in order, charging system in place, 12volts at the starter trigger and no crank, the starter is bad. If there is no or little voltage at trigger and no start, the cause could be ignition switch, relay or damaged wire.Hope this helps. |

Had the same problem two years ago. Changed the starter. Problem solved.
It's a bit tricky job, though, if you have a 16T. You have to dremel through the plastic cover in front to get access to one of the bolts. You need a wrench with integral ratches? to losen the bolt.
And you should memorize your manouver movements you do to get the starter out of there, in order to easily get the new one in place
It is probably best to remove some of the tubes in the front. As I did as I also exchanged the "hooter" valve in the same operation.
Totally some six hours for hooter valve and starter replacement...
