Hi guys,
Im working on a 2001 2.0L 9-3 that was burning oil and had low compression.
I took the head of and found the head gasket was messed up to the timing chain and let oil into the cylinders.
I brought the head to my machine shop and they machined all valve seats since they were pitted and replaced all valve stem seals and two intake valves. The surface had minimal warp so they didnt dust it up.
Now I assembled the had and started cleaning the block face as well as the pistons and cylinder bores. As I did I noticed that the cylinders had some pitting as well. Its like paint flaking off. and the cross hatch is gone in this spots. I really dont want to put much more money into that old car. You cant really feel much difference touching the spots. Who has any experience with that? Is it possible to leave it like that or will that just cause more disaster? Can you hone the bores or do you replace the liner?
Any input will be greatly appreciated !

| Yes, years ago there was a problem with both the block and the heads doing that. Some people would have the sleeves inserted and others would weld them up or use different metal material to fill and sand. Others would just put everything back together and not worry about it. In most cases it wont cause an issue unless they get very bad. |

I added pics but for some reason there are gone now?!
Anyhow, I just talked to the machinist that did the head. He said it looks like water damage. I would agree with that. It also looks like the cylinder bore is coated and that coating is coming of. Does anybody know if it is coated or not? I couldnt find anything that they are. If thats the case the boring and re honing is anyway not an option, then the whole liner has to be changed. I dont think its worth all the time and money to do so. I think I just put it back together and call it a day.
More thoughts?

| Not that I am aware of. Yeap, we saw them. They were just too large to really see well. |

OK, Update:
I got it all back together Wednesday. first turn of the key and it fired right up. I t ran good for a while and started to get a bit of a cough. So I drove it out of the garage and did a little test drive up and down the road. It ran good cruising along but was hesitant when I stepped on the throttle.
So I drove it back into the garage and it was smoking bad out of the exhaust. Looked like the engine oil was pushed up the dipstick pipe. and it smelled like burned oil.
So I did a compression test and all 4 cylinders are now nice and even around 180psi. I had about no compression on 3 cylinders when I got the car from my buddy. So now I dont think there is a lot of blow by with that compression. I took turbo pipe that goes to the intake out and it was pretty oily. I had it laying on the bench and within 10 minutes it drain about 2 tee spoons of oil out. I would guess the turbo lost a seal?! Or what else could cause that? I could need some more suggestions. Can the turbo be repaired or do in need a new/good used one?
The cable from the mass air sensor is broken was well. Well it was hanging on the last lil bit of the wire, I would assume that has influence on how the engine is running as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

| If the compression is off on one cyl fix that head gasket first. |

Since I had the cylinder head off and the head gasket was shot I sure replaced that already as written in my first post.
All 4 cylinders are at the same level after the head was reworked and the head gasket replaced.
Anyhow, I too the turbo out and the whole rotating assembly is wobbeling like crazy and the blades of the impeller look worn out.
I just get a new one.
