My '01 aero wagon is turning 110,000. The car is in great shape and is due for an oil change. I've been told by several mechanics that the drawbacks of switching to synthetic oil at this point outweigh the benefits. Mainly, they say that the different detergents that are used by each don't work well together. Thus preventing the new synthetic to do its job entirely.
What are YOUR thoughts on making the switch and should I be installing a PCV kit as well(no sludge yet)?
Thanks again and again,

This is the first time I ever heard that there would be drawbacks to using Synthetic in my 95. What exactly would the detergents do or not do that conventional oil detergents would?
I recently removed the valve cover to replace the gaskets; there was some sludge. I cleaned out my engine with diesel fuel dropped the pan cleaned it and replaced the oil pan tube and seal. I also did the PCV upgrade and now I'm using synthetic my car has 117k.
When I dropped the pan it was filthy but no metal filings and everything looked good. I did all this as a precaution after hearing all the stories about sludge. I bought this car 01/09 at auction and didn't know the history of the car; I like working on my own cars so I did the work myself. I'm not an expert or a mechanic. Although I've owned several Saab's (900's and 99's) in the past 1986 to 2001. I fell off for a few years (Infinity and BMW); I always used synthetic in my Saabs and never had any problems. The 95 is new to me and could use all the help I can to keep it running. Did I make a mistake switching to synthetic or should I have used a semi? I know that synthetic is a better oil; will the 95 run differently on synthetic on higher mileage cars? |
