Hi Protech:
I happen to be lucky enough to own one of these cool cars...although Nils doesn't run at the moment. I live in Seattle and have found the people around here to be quite knowledgable about the cars.
If you happen to own one and are looking for parts, I would suggest buying the parts sooner rather than later, as Saab mechanics are purging their inventories of these parts.
That happened to me in Seattle...one very reputable mechanic purged his inventory to the junkyard...new engines, trannys, etc. Both he and I were crushed (no pun intended) when he found out that I needed some parts.
Anyway, good luck to you.
Also, try Saabnet.com

| I got my first Saab, a 67 stroker back in 76 when I got out of college. I set up and ran my own Saab repair shop here in Vermont from 89 through the mid 90's. I did restorations and put together some real nice 99's. The most intense one was a 78 EMS that I stripped to bare metal, painted on it for weeks and reassembled it over 2 years with parts from 4 parts cars. I built a turbo engine and put it on a 5 speed and it was one nice car. But, it was relatively high maintenance and didn't do anything that a solid 900 wouldn't do with fewer man hours per mile. Even putting premium gas in it was getting to be a pain and it was too nice to run in the winter so I passed it on to other owners who still love and care for it. Now I have a bunch of 900's that rarely break and are cheep to run. I use the money I save to fund my airplane. So why did that mechanic scrap all his 99 parts? Because he, like me, is running out of life and there comes a point where having literally tons of old obsolite (though Neat) stuff around can strangle a guy and throwing it off frees one up to move to new things. I also gave away a 93B and all the 93 and 96 stuff I had, a huge collection that I once valued highly but was happy to give to someone younger and with more time and energy. So, that's it. You can't do it forever. It's like a flash in the pan when you look back. |

Great to hear! I follow that sentiment exactly. I have always want to put A 9000 Aero engine in a Sonett but never had the times. Like you, I too sold all my stuff and moved on to other projects.... Boy was it fun times but as the age catches you things seem to become less important. LOL..... |

| I once had an idea to put a VW Squareback drive in the rear of a 95. Fortunately, even though I seriously wanted to act on this stupid idea I didn't have the resources and found more sensible ways to amuse myself. I did put an electric motor in a 96 back in the early 90's, before it was as common as scateboards. the cars I do now are Insights with fancy AC drives and expensive batteries. They work great but can't hold a thing compaired to the cool factor of an electric 96. Probably good you didn't do the Sonett. They were scary enough with little engines and your still around to reminisce with me. |
