Replacing The Liftback Cable In A 79-93 900/94 Convertible but the info should be similiar on the 9000 and the NG900
Be aware that this is not an easy task. Although the cable is a simple piece of hardware, the location and means of access makes this fairly time consuming. NOTE: This can be performed without removing the seat, but removal of the seat makes removing the upholstery and accessing the components much easier. If you plan to remove the seat, there are 4 bolts (2 on each side of the seat) that need to be removed.
Seat Removal Instructions:
| STEP 1 | Remove the buttons from the electronic seat controls (where applicable)
|
| STEP 2 | Remove the plastic covers from both sides of the seat (the interior cover will only be over the pivot joint at the back of the seat)
|
| STEP 3 | Remove the 4 bolts securing the seat
|
| STEP 4 | Tilt the seat inward and MAKE SURE to unhook all electrical connections. This may require you to cut some of the plastic ties securing the wiring to the seat.
|
| STEP 5 | Manually release the two latches holding the seat in position

Cable Replacement Instructions
| STEP 6 | Underneath the bottom of the seatback, there will be 5 metal clamps that hold the two sections of the seatback upholstery together. You can attempt to remove them, but cutting them away and replacing with 75 pound test plastic ties is advised |
| STEP 7 | Before you remove the upholstery, you will need to remove the handle and cover from the liftback mechanism. Do so with a pair of needle nose pliers (be careful, it can break easily). 2 clips attached to the upholstery (located on the outer edges) will need to be released to pull up the upholstery |
| STEP 8 | Pull the upholstery (keeping even on both sides) towards the headrest. You will only need to pull the upholstery to the point that you can access the liftback mechanism. Depending on the seat, you may need to cut the side bolster foam from the backing (cut where the side bolster meets the backing). Do not despair, this can easily be repaired with a can of spray adhesive and some patience (make sure to wear disposable latex gloves, you will spend hours getting the adhesive off of your hands |
| STEP 9 | 4 small plastic tabs secure the cable housing. 2 at the liftback handle, 1 directly below the handle, and 1 on the opposite side of the frame. Carefully remove these tabs, remove the 2 bolts securing the liftback mechanism, and remove the tie securing the cable in the middle of the seatback. 2 cables, one straight down, and the other running to the opposite side. The cable running to the opposite side should be secured with a plastic tie in the middle of the seatback.
|
| STEP 10 | First, connect the long side of the cable to the release hinge (located at the pivot point at the base of the seatback), run the cable to the opposite side and make the connection to the second release hinge. Connect the cable to the liftback handle, and replace the small tabs that secure the cable housing. BEFORE you reattach the mechanism, and bolt the handle mechanism back into place |
| STEP 11 | The cable running to the opposite side must be attached high in the middle of the seatback to remove any slack in the cable. Before attaching with a new plastic tie, hold the cable in place and test the function. If both of the release hinges retract fully and the seat tilts, secure the cable |
| STEP 12 | If you cut the foam, use the spray adhesive to glue the side bolsters back to the backing. Let the glue dry for 20 minutes. Pull the upholstery back down, reattach the cover and handle to the liftback. TEST THE HANDLE AGAIN |
| STEP 13 | Reattach the two clips at the corners, and using 75 pound test plastic ties, connect the two sections that connect the two sides of the upholstery. Make sure they are tight, to prevent the upholstery from becoming loose.
You are done! All that remains is reconnecting all of the electrical connections, replacing any plastic ties that you removed, bolting the seat and covers back into place, and replacing the electrical seat cover |
