NO START CONDITION DIAGNOSTICS

[9000, 900 79-94]

Warning! The very first thing that must be done is to determine WHICH ONE is missing. Spark or Fuel. Once you determine this you can use the info below to determine the cause of the missing action. Please do NOT guess. Use this info and follow it closely. It should help you diagnose your problem correctly

IGNITION DIAGNOSIS - There are several basic things that should be done in-order to diagnose a no-start condition. First, check to see if you have spark at the center terminal of the distributor cap by removing the coil wire, hold it with rubber handled pliers and point it toward the engine about 2 inches from the block? If you have spark there and spark at the plugs then look to the fuel system for your problem. If you DO NOT have spark at the center terminal of the distributor or at the plugs then your problem is more that likely your ignition amplifier module.

Warning!BE CAREFUL!!! HIGH VOLTAGE!!!!!

FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS - Check to be certain that you have 12 volts at the fuel pump. (The Pump is located in the trunk under the gray carpeted wooden boards). If you do have 12 volts at the pump then check to see if you have twelve volts between the two wires of one of the injectors. If 12 volts is present at the pump but the pump does not run, then the problem is a faulty fuel pump.

Further diagnosis would more that likely lead to Fuel system control module or relay failure!

Warning!DANGER! SAAB IGNITION SYSTEMS ARE HIGH VOLTAGE AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURY!! TESTING THE IGNITION SYSTEM AND FUEL SYSTEM SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY THOSE AUTHORIZED TO DO SO!!!!!

I have a '92 turbo motor and 5 speed swapped into an '88 body that was once home to a NA motor and auto trans - I swapped everything but the ABS and airbags and, having gone over the FAQ's page and my Bentley manual several times to find a solution to my "no start" condition, one of the most obvious possible causes seemed curiously absent from both sources -
the ignition switch. Every single ignition and fuel related component passed tests for continuous and switched voltage, resistance, and connectivity and I could not conceive of what could possibly be the actualissue. It turns out that every position on the original ignition switch worked fine (which was partly why I never suspected it to be the culprit) except for that last one, the one that sets the starter in motion and tells the rest of the related systems that everything is ok for startup. Swapping in another ignition switch was the solution and a real "duh" moment for me.
