Today when I got into my 2002 9-3 with a 5-speed manual it would not go into any gear except 3rd and 4th. The problem turned out to be a small rod that connects the shifter linkage to the transmission transferring the side to side movement of the stick to the transmission linkage. At each end of this little rod - located below the brake master - is a small plastic socket that fits over a metal ball. One of these sockets had fallen off the ball. The fix was simply to put the transmission in neutral and reach down, undo the clip on the end of the socket, push it back on, and redo the clip. Voila, all the gears are back!
