SAAB 93 MANUAL TRANS REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT

Step 1 Lift up car with stands or lift and cover fenders to prevent scraping paint
Step 2 Remove Front Grille, intake cover, battery cover, battery leads and battery
Step 3 Remove the mount bracket for the positive battery cable and remove the battery tray
Step 4 Put car in 4th gear and remove the gearbox plug (plastic) and lock in gear by inserting pin
Step 5 Remove securing clip that holds selector rod to linkage
Step 5A Inside car lift up shifter rubber, engage 3rd gear pulling shift rod away from outside linkage and fit pin in hold visible after removing the rubber shifter cover. This locks car inside to 3rd gear
Step 6 Push in clutch about 2 inches to prevent fluid from coming out of reservoir
Step 7 Remove slave clip that holds line to slave and reinstall clip after line has been removed
Step 8 Remove reverse light connector at rear of transmission
Step 10 Disconnect positive battery cable bracket to engine
Step 11 Remove top 3 gearbox bolts and fit locating studs if you have them. This will help during reassembly
Step 12 Remove alternator connections
Step 13 Remove oxygen sensor connections
Step 14 Remove the gear selector linkage in the engine compartment
Step 15 Remove the rear engine mount nut and loosen the bolts that hold in that mount
Step 16 Lift engine slightly and remove the bolts that hold the mount to the sub frame
Step 17 Lift car and remove front wheels and remove the right hand inner liner that covers the serpentine belt
Step 18 Remove the header pipe completely from the car. You must do this or you can damage the flex joint
Step 19 Remove the rear engine mount and torque arm.
Step 20 Remove the Shift linkage as well
Step 21 Remove the steering gear screws and the screws that hold the line to the sub frame as well
Step 22 Remove the Air filter housing as well
Step 23 Remove AC lines from line clips on sub frame
Step 24 Remove the engine oil cooler and intercooler
Step 25 Remove the radiator
Step 26 Remove the outer ball joint bolts
Step 27 Remove the upper ball joints from the sway bar
Step 28 Remove the flywheel protective plate
Step 29 Remove the rear support plate bolts
Step 30 Remove the sub frame with Saab lift or the like by removing the remaining 6 bolts that hold the sub frame in. Don't forget any washers that fall
Step 31 Drain Gearbox oil & remove the Left drive shaft with a spanner-type tool
Step 32 Lower the car and remove the bolt from the left engine mount
Step 33 Remove the battery ground from transmission and the transmission mount
Step 34 Remove the transmission by lowering the engine to clear the body of car and dropping the transmission out. These transmissions are not tremendously heavy but they are awkward and hard to handle. Use trans dropping jack to remove by removing the final two transmission bolts
Step 35 Refit in reverse
