TIMING COVER REMOVAL

[9000]

Car icon Thanks to Dave Cambell for contributing to this FAQ!

The information here applies to both the 2.0 Liter Saab 9000 and 900. The instructions will show you how to remove the timing cover and notes regarding that proceedure. Keep in mind that this is not the complete proceedure for replacing the timing chain or removing the oil pan but this will give you a very good idea regarding how to approach those jobs as well.

Warning!Removing the timing cover without removing the head is not recommend at all. It can be done but won't be easy nor will it be done correctly when completed. You can however do the job by removing the oil pan first. This will free up the cover and allow you to remvove but remember there is a line up pin which holds the cover to the block so pull straigt out on the cover to remove it.

Headgasket replacement (includes timing info & head removal) for 900 but can be used for 9000

Remove the valve cover first

Move flywheel to top dead center and line up the camshaft pulley marks to the marks on the cams.

Warning! There is 14 chain links between the two marks when installed correctly (16 if you count the two links that are sitting on top of the marks on the pulleys) During the install count the links and make sure the flywheel mark is at zero, the #1 piston (one closest to the timing cover) and the two cam sprockets are all right on. If they are not correct then you likely have too many or not enough links between the two sprockets.

Remove the crank pulley, waterpump pulley and bolts on both sides of the timing cover including the ones that go up/down into the head

Remove the waterpump tube and move it up out of the way and remove the waterpump
