FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT INFORMATION

[9000]

Do not smoke when working in the fuel area. Most Saab fuel filters in Saabs are located in in front of the rear wheel, above the rear axle or in the engine compartment attached to the battery housing. You will need two fuel filter sealing rings on both sides of the fuel filter. Remove the cover over the filter (if applicable), replace the 4 fuel filter sealing rings and the job is complete.

1988 Saab 900S fuel filter replacement procedure.

Note: Check the contents of the new fuel filter package to ensure that there are (4) new copper washers for the fuel line bolts.

The replacement procedure should ideally be done when the tank is low on fuel. Keep containers close at hand that can be slid under the vehicle to catch leaking fuel if there are any problems. Keep a fire extinguisher handy at all times.

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Release fuel pressure by loosening nut at end of fuel rail.
3. Chock the wheels. Raise the passenger side rear of the car and
support with stands. Fuel filter is located just forward of the right-rear tire.
Note: The fuel line between the tank and the filter will always have constant pressure because of gravity feed.
4. Use a device that can pinch the fuel line between the filter and tank without damaging it. (i.e. vice grips with several wraps of electrical tape around the pinch points for cushion, or perhaps a small C clamp with
tape?) This procedure is not recommended if you determine that the fuel line is fatigued.
5. Loosen and remove bolt on the supply side of the fuel filter.
6. Loosen and remove bolt on the demand side of the fuel filter.
7. Remove the torx nut securing the filter and pull it out.
8. Label the new filter with the date for future reference.
9. Follow the same steps as installation, in the reverse order. Ensure that a new copper washer is placed on both sides of the metal connector on the fuel line ends.
10. Turn the ignition key to the accessory position.
11. Grab the battery lug that was disconnected and set it on the terminal so as to temporarily provide power for the fuel pump to engage. Keep an eye on the bolt that was loosened at the end of the fuel rail. (Safety glasses are highly recommended.) When fuel begins to leak from the loose
bolt, pull the battery lug away, turn off the ignition key, and then reconnect the battery.
