There have been tons of problems with the automatically adjusting clutch cables on the Saab 900 94-98 cars. The basic problem is that the clutch cable is designed to automatically adjust the pedal free play when the clutch wears but the factory cables just don't work that well. When the cable begins to get worn the automatic adjustment in the cable fails which ends up causing the clutch or the transmission to get torn up.
The have been so many problems that a clutch cable that is MANUALLY adjustable has been designed so when the pedal free play is excessive you basically pop the hood and use a 14mm wrench to adjust the pedal to fairly tight again. This cable has worked great and seems to be what most people prefer because it takes out the uncertainty of whether or not the OES automatically adjuster cable works.
List below are two pages that Saab came out with to address the clutch cable issues but keep in mind that the manually adjustable cable was not out yet when these were released.
One other note to consider is that some clutch cable failures can be attributed to binding arms on the clutch which will also cause premature cable failures.
